The bird, the flowers, the whimsy of this makes me smile. I imagine this bird watching her children take flight. It is a bittersweet moment that any mom of young adults will understand. She has given them wings to fly and has joy in knowing those wings will take them far but also bring them home occasionally. Her work is finished, and she is expectantly “Letting Go.”

We think about work, money, meals, family, news, and a lot of time all of that mental energy zaps us of our color, our joy. Lilies symbolize a simpler thought. The lilies neither toil, nor reap, nor wonder what to wear, yet, they are vibrant in color, dominant in size, perennial, and so very beautiful. Next time worries about the “uncontrollable stuff of life” start to creep in, take a step back and “Consider the Lilies.”

Somewhere the moon is full and most of the flowers in this painting are basking in its glow. I imagine the biggest flower is a little late to the party, but despite a rough day, it can finally relax and just enjoy being a “Flower in the Moon Glow.”
The picture of this does not do the sky color justice. It is a lovely deep purple with a slight glow in the corner.

We spend our time thinking about the past, worrying about tomorrow, and missing the now. Yesterday is gone, and tomorrow is not promised. Let’s learn a lesson from nature and live “In the Moment.”

At Audubon Park in New Orleans a lone flower bloomed on a sprawling magnolia tree. Once I put it on canvas, I decided to give it some friends, and this was the result. The lonely magnolia is shining its lovely differences in a sea of sameness. If I had been painting when my daughter was a young teen, I would have hung this in her room as a reminder to not worry about what others have or do. Just “Be Yourself.”

Gasparilla Island at sunset. It was rarely crowded, always peaceful, and provided breathtaking, bright orange, pink, and sometimes purple, or red sunsets. This particular evening featured a sky full of glowing ember. As the sky danced in solid orange glory, the show burned the sunset into my memory, forever keeping “Gasparilla on my Mind.”

This is one of those sunsets that we beach goers just have to capture in a photo. As always, the photo does not match the memory, but this painting does. It reflects the summer sunset I enjoyed. This could be any sunset, on any beach, preserved forever on canvas, but this just happens to be my “Marco Island Memory.”

Think of a lazy summer day when you would recline on the bare ground and gaze up at the clouds. If you watched long enough, you would see a menagerie of animals. By the time you could point it out to a friend and say, “Look! There is a bear!” the breeze had reshaped the cloud, and the perspective is yours alone. It is now a quick memory of a slow-moving cloud that has morphed into a giraffe. That’s the way life is. This painting is all about the stories in the clouds. Find the animals and the sea creatures floating along as the sun sets. Some might look and see the same shapes, while others might see something else. Just remember that life is all about “Perspectives.”

So often, we let the periods of night in our lives hide the beauty around us. When all seems lost in darkness, if you look hard enough, you will see a hint of beauty. A touch of grace. A glimmer of what waits for you when the darkness lifts. The air becomes less oppressive, and the darkness less blinding. Open your eyes in the darkness and find some relief in the carefree beauty and blessing of “Blooms in the Night.”

The paint sprayer bubbles reminded me of water which led me to floating vines and branches. When I finished, I thought, “Well now, that is kind of a mess, but the more I look at it, the more I see a perfect metaphor for life. I can relate to the tangled, uncontrolled branches and vines that are trying their best to produce something pretty. It reminds me that when life seems out of order, we can still find “Beauty in Chaos.”

Daisies are free spirits that seem to grow wherever they want. They are simple, yet beautiful and fill meadows and gardens alike with their happy demeanor. They are also willing to sacrifice their petals to solve the age-old debate, “He loves me. He loves me not.”

This lovely bouquet of sunflowers was a hostess gift. I smile when I look at this, as I’m reminded of a warm summer evening, good friends, and the contentment that follows after a memorable “Dinner with Friends.”

If you have ever seen Lantana, with its mix of neon orange, pink, and yellow, then you will understand my inspiration for this painting. It is a flower that remains happy in the worst of conditions and the hotter and dryer it is, the brighter it glows. We could all learn a lesson from these “Happy Little Flowers.”

The brush followed my mood and soon realized I was telling a story of calm in the storm. Look at the sky; there is a storm brewing. Now look at the flowers; they are serene and living as if the storm will pass and all will be well. A lesson for all of us because storms do pass, and weather improves. When a storm is brewing, consider the gentle flowers who, even in the mist of chaos, find their “Peace at the Beach.”

Kindness is a universal language and transcends culture, background, and status. It is one quiet ray of sunshine that glimmers from inside and gently spreads from life to life. It doesn’t take much effort, but a friendly gesture, pleasant response, or small act of thoughtfulness can brighten someone’s day. Kindness travels far when given away and becomes a “Golden Thread” that unites us all.

It is often said sarcastically, as if the privilege of “Looking at life through rose colored glasses,” is reserved for the innocent, or ignorant. Despite the general philosophy around this age-old phrase, it still carries value. Assume the best, not the worst in other’s intentions. We can’t control their words or actions, but we can control ours. Just assume they are having a day and give them a pass. This painting is a reminder that sometimes grace for others is as much self-preservation as it is looking at life through “Rose Colored Glasses.”

This one flower, tucked in with hundreds of flowers on the same peony bush stood out as if to say, “Hey! I am the most beautiful flower on this bush. Paint me!” So, I did. Sometimes, like this peony, we have to make some noise to get noticed. I am glad this one caught my attention because it was “One of a Kind.”

When you look at this painting, be reminded that the light at the end of the tunnel is not the only reward. Our focus often pinpoints the goal, and so often we miss the beauty of the journey. You will get there eventually, but for now, take time to enjoy the revelations and scenery “Before the Light at the End.”
